We are very pleased to present the following resolutions, concerning Iran and Cuba, from the Hamilton District Labour Council.
a.) Whereas U.S. President Donald Trump has, in violation of Article 2 of the UN Charter, made war-like demands against Iran and has arrayed a powerful armada off of Iran’s shores, thereby threatening to set off a widespread regional war in West Asia.
BIRT the HDLC:
- calls on the CLC to issue a strongly-worded statement calling for Prime
Minister Mark Carney to distance himself from any U.S. and/or Israeli attack on Iran;
- requests the CLC write letters to the PMO, with copies distributed to the media (including the Hamilton Spectator) outlining its position on this matter and to circulate a copy of the letter to the CLC affiliates.
(From H&S / Political Action – February 10, 2026)
b.) BIRT HDLC allocates up to $200 for snacks and light refreshments for an educational forum (Carney’s austerity in a time of Trump attacks) on Saturday, February 28, 2026 (1-3pm) at Solidarity Place.
(From Education (ad hoc) – January 19, 2026)
Resolutions proposed by the Executive Council with recommendations of concurrence:
a.) BIRT the HDLC contributes $300 towards the purchase of group promotional items for Canadian labour councils at the CLC convention in Winnipeg.
c.) Whereas Cuba has been under a U.S. blockade for over 65 years, with the declared aim of the blockade is to make the Cuban people suffer so that they will overthrow their government;
Whereas the current U.S. government of Donald Trump has greatly increased the sanctions, and has banned any country from selling oil or energy products to
Cuba;
Whereas all electricity in Cuba is generated from oil, this measure by the U.S. is designed to literally bring the Cuban economy to a standstill, forcing the closure of everything, including hospitals and health centres;
BIRT the HDLC donates $500.00 to the Canadian Network on Cuba to purchase one small made in Canada power station and share the request for support with affiliates.
